Our team here at Floor Coverings International of Winter Garden loves to install beautiful hardwood floors for our customers across the greater Orlando area. Once we leave your home though, it’s time to take care of those floors. Today we want to share a few tips that will help keep your hardwood floors looking amazing for years to come. You don’t have to get down on your hands and knees with cleaning materials to take advantage of these tips either. There are plenty of simple preventative steps you can take to protect your floors and stop damage before it ever happens.

Protecting Hardwood Floors from Furniture scratches Damage from Furniture

Furniture such as chairs and tables can be some of the biggest culprits when it comes to hardwood floor damage, but that doesn’t mean you have to embrace minimalism and live a furniture-free lifestyle once your new hardwood floors are installed. Floor protectors come in a variety of styles, from fabric “socks” you pull over the legs of your chairs to plastic sliders that the chair legs can sit on. The most popular style of furniture sliders are usually felt pads or silicon stickers that adhere to the bottom of your chair legs. These are popular because they are essentially invisible but still effectively protect your floor as your furniture slides around during normal use.

Damage from Rugs

Speaking of preventing sliding, it’s also a good idea to put rug pads under all of your area rugs. First of all, this is just a good practice to ensure that your guests don’t slip and fall as they walk around your house, but it can also help prevent scratches on your floors as well. As dirt and dust are tracked around your house, a rug sliding across hardwood can create abrasions that damage the finish of your floor. Just be sure to read reviews of any rug pad you decide to buy because cheaply made pads can leave residues that cause more damage (or at least more cleanup headache) than they prevent!

Keeping Hardwood Floors CleanDamage from the Great Outdoors

As mentioned above, dirt and dust can cause problems for hardwood floors, leading to the potential for scrapes and marks that require more serious repairs. Regularly dusting and sweeping is the best way to minimize hardwood floor issues caused by dirt, dust, rocks, and other outdoor interlopers. But it’s also a great idea to put down walk-off mats just inside any external door to your home. Whether someone is coming in through your front door, back door, or garage door, dirt from their shoes can be tracked in and unwittingly scuff up your beautiful hardwood floors. Walk-off mats do a great job of containing this issue to keep your floors looking great!
